Brock emailed to say that something's wrong with the Linksys router: that he can't get his desktop online unless he plugs it straight into the modem. (This explains why wifidog has been reporting frequent outages for that node for the past week or so.) I went by, checked the connections, and everything was working (without my doing anything). <shrug>

Brock left a message yesterday saying that he was having trouble getting his new Airport Express working as a wifi client (to play music from itunes to his stereo). I (Gabe) went by today – I reconfigured the device into “client” mode, and whitelisted it in wifidog.conf.

I stopped in briefly to check it out – everything was working fine. Channel 1 seems like the best place for us to be; there's only one other network on that channel. I'll drop in again the next chance I get.

I was able to stop in for a half hour this afternoon and spoke with Brock while I waited for my chicken & rice with an olive vanilla sauce (quite good). His computer is working fine and wired directly into the router. But some of his customers have mentioned they can not connect wirelessly.

After I did some testing I would agree there seems to be a problem with the signal. I did see a good signal for a while, but then it started dropping in and out after 10 minutes or so. Even when I had a good signal showing in netstumbler my ping was pretty flaky. Also, loading pages took forever and I never did get the login page - the title would load but the page would not. (so I never did get on the net.) I was able to load the router pages after a few tries and I didn't see anything obviously wrong (not that I know what I'm looking for.)

There were several other networks running on channel 6, so it's good that Gabe changed them to 1. There is another network using 1, but it's faint and should be ok. They have 2 cordless phones (I don't know the frequency), but they were not using either while I was there. Nothing has changed recently that I would expect to interfere. I did not reset the router while I was there, but Brock said he had recently and the uptime was 2 days.

I didn't have time today to power cycle the router or go into the office and see if it was a better signal there. If anyone is interested I have the saved netstumbler logs (with all visible networks) and my ping log, just email me.

Received an email from Brock that people are unable to connect to the hotspot. Gabe emailed the discuss list to ask if someone can go check it out. Wifidog reports the node up, so perhaps it's a wifi channel conflict.
